Starve Hollow Camping Trip

We arrived late afternoon and it was a beautiful sunny afternoon, well that all changed quickly as a front moved in around 5:30 and it was a deluge!!!  The good part was that it only lasted for 30-40 minutes.  But it was enough to make everything wet and muddy.  We made some new friends on this trip, Kim and Dave Allen, they are friends of our friends Carolyn and Lyn Weakley.  They were a delightful couple, Dave Allen brought his Bass Tracker and did some fishing while Lyn and I did some kayaking early on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  The ladies slept.

Saturday morning Lyn and I were on the lake before the sun was up, it was dark but light enough to see where we were headed.  I wanted to get on the backside of the lake before the birds and wildlife were active.  It was a good morning with some photographs of a Great Egret, Redwing Blackbird (female) and some Canada geese.  We saw a bald eagle fly around the perimeter of the lake but he was too far to get a picture.  We were hoping for some Kingfishers but that did not happen either.

We enjoyed a nice lunch and a wonderful dinner with marinated chicken, potato salad, pasta salad, baked beans and cole slaw.

Sunday we were out early but waited until sunrise and what a sunrise!!  IT was gorgeous.  Again we photographed a Great Egret, Canada geese, a great blue heron and a surprise visitor...a Common Tern, it was the first time we had seen one at Starve Hollow.

Hope you enjoy the photos, our next camping outing is Memorial Weekend at Summit Lake, on the east side of Indianapolis.  There is a lot of wildlife there including eagles, osprey, heron, otters, etc, so we are excited about the photographic opportunities on that trip.

Charlestown State Park Pix 4-21-18

The first camping weekend of 2018 finally arrived...and the weather couldn't have been any nicer!!  It was sunny and warm days/cool nights.  We enjoyed some good company, awesome chicken chili (I'm biased cuz I made it...) and we took a couple of hikes around the park.  On Saturday afternoon we hiked the trail along the Ohio River where we saw lots of different wildflowers, a hairy woodpecker, white breasted nuthatch and a small waterfall.  All in all, it was a very pleasant outing...looking forward to next outing at Starve Hollow Lake on May 4th where we will get to kayak as well.

While visiting Evansville for an APS Conference it was too cold to go walking and shooting so I shot some traffic trails on Riverside Drive from my hotel window...

Friday the 13th...My Lucky Day

Well, I am sure that Friday the 13th was unlucky for some of you cats, but this cat scored well today...First the morning started with a beautiful sunrise and then a Bald Eagle flew in front of my truck in New Pekin first thing this morning and then was kind enough to land in a tree where I could get a couple of shots at him.  Then there was an eagle in the nest at Starve Hollow, It was a long shot and I wasn't able to tell if there were eggs or eaglets in the nest but she appeared to be busy.  I also scored a nice Redwing Blackbird squawking at me, a Yellow Rumped Warbler, a Canada goose nesting, 33 turtles sunbathing in one pond...yes I said 33!!,  and a couple of other birds as well...all in all it was a Lucky 13 for me.
